1. Use ice therapy
If you hurt your foot, apply an ice pack immediately. Wrap the ice in a towel or cloth and use as a compress on the afflicted part. Use the procedure for at least half an hour, four times a day. This will help reduce swelling and pain.
2. Take medicine
In case of inflammation or pain, take an over-the-counter painkiller like Ibuprofen or Tylenol. It will aid in providing immediate pain relief.
3. Wear flat shoes
Avoid high heels as much as possible. Heels can damage the healing process. Try to wear flat shoes and keep your feet covered. A hard sole is more suitable for damaged toes.
4. Take a rest
Limit your walking if you are suffering from a broken digit. Take a load off of your feet and stay home if you can. Use crutches to avoid putting pressure on the foot with the injured digit. Take a rest either by sitting or lying in bed.
5. Use elevation
While sleeping, make sure you use an elevation. The foot should be kept above heart level. You can use a pillow for elevation. This will also speed the pace of healing.
6. Use medical tape
If the injury is not serious, make sure you use proper medication at home. At first, place a cotton ball in between the broken toe and adjacent one. Wrap the digits with gauze followed by a second cover of medical tape. This will provide enough support to the affected part and increase healing.
7. Use casting
An X-ray reveals the seriousness of foot injuries. If a toe has fractured and is causing unbearable trouble while walking, you may need a cast. The doctor will put on the cast after examining the fracture or multiple small fractures.
8. Avoid exercises
Whether you are a fitness freak or not, try to avoid physical exercises for some time. Try not to overstretch the foot muscles or else it might cause substantial damage.
9. Use a heat pad
If the broken digit shows recovery or the bruising disappears, use a heat pad for some time. While recuperating, warm heat therapy helps the healing process.
10. Maintain hygiene
Make sure your toe doesn’t come in contact with dust or dirt. This might cause infection, further aggravating the problem. Wear socks or use pads.
A broken toe could take almost a month to fully recover. Make sure you stay off your feet as often as possible. It will increase the speed of healing and help you return to normal pace of life.
